BRATS Bus
Baldwin County BRATS Bus provides public transportation throughout Baldwin County through the Baldwin Regional Area Transit System. The service includes door-to-door shared rides, BRATS On-Demand booking, accessible vehicles, scheduled transportation by phone, and a vanpool option for qualifying commuters. This article explains how BRATS works, how to schedule and manage a trip, what information to prepare when booking, how fares and payments work, what to expect at pickup, and how to avoid cancellations, missed rides, and other common transportation problems.
BRATS Public Transportation Service
BRATS stands for Baldwin Regional Area Transit System and is operated as Baldwin County public transportation. Baldwin County describes BRATS as a door-to-door public transit service designed for everyone. Riders can use the system for transportation to work, medical appointments, stores, and other destinations served by the system.
The official BRATS Public Bus Transportation page is the central county resource for the service. It provides access to scheduling information, BRATS On-Demand details, fares and routes, operating hours, and other rider information.
BRATS is a shared-ride service rather than a private car service. A vehicle may pick up and drop off other passengers during the same trip. As a result, a rider may not travel directly from the pickup point to the final destination after boarding. This shared format should be considered when planning transportation for an appointment, work shift, or other activity with a fixed starting time.
Service also depends on available seats, vehicles, drivers, and scheduling constraints. The county identifies BRATS scheduling as first come, first served. A requested trip therefore is not automatically available simply because a rider submits a particular pickup time.
BRATS On-Demand Service
BRATS On-Demand is the county's app-based shared-ride service. Riders can schedule trips through the BRATS On-Demand smartphone application and follow their vehicle in real time after a ride is confirmed. The service can also be accessed without a smartphone by booking through BRATS customer service.
The county's BRATS On-Demand information page states that service operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. BRATS also provides wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Riders who need a wheelchair-accessible trip should select that accessibility option while booking so the transportation request can be matched with the appropriate vehicle.
The mobile application can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. BRATS also provides a browser-based method for requesting a ride. Mobile app scheduling itself is available at all times, although actual transportation operates during BRATS service hours.
Creating an app account
The county's rider application guide describes the basic account setup process. A new rider registers through the app and provides a name, mobile telephone number, and email address. A rider who already has an account can log in using the registered mobile number. The application sends a five-digit confirmation code by text to complete the login process.
The rider guide also recommends allowing location access and notifications. Location permission helps the application identify pickup points and display trip information. Notifications allow the rider to receive alerts as the vehicle approaches.
Riders who want step-by-step illustrations of the application can review the county's BRATS Rider App Guide. The guide covers account setup, pickup and destination entry, booking, ride tracking, favorite locations, scheduled trips, cancellations, and post-trip feedback.
Booking a BRATS Ride
A BRATS trip may be requested through the On-Demand application or by contacting the BRATS Scheduling Team. The county's ride scheduling instructions identify customer service scheduling hours as Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
When booking by phone, riders should have complete trip information available before speaking with the scheduler. BRATS specifically instructs passengers to be prepared to provide:
The rider's name.
A telephone number.
The physical pickup address.
The appointment time, when applicable.
The physical address of the destination.
Any additional stops required during the trip.
The number of passengers accompanying the rider.
Any need for special assistance.
Information about a mobility device.
Whether lift equipment will be needed for boarding.
Providing the exact physical addresses is particularly important. An incomplete or incorrect pickup or destination address can interfere with the scheduling request or put the vehicle at a different location than the rider expects.
Booking through the app
In the rider application, a trip begins by entering a pickup point and destination. The application may use the rider's current location as the default pickup location, but that location can be changed. The guide also allows the rider to move the map pin to identify a more exact pickup point.
Before confirming a trip, the app can display available transportation options, estimated arrival information, fare information, and estimated trip duration. Riders can also specify the number of riders and supported accessibility needs before scheduling.
Once a ride is confirmed, the trip details remain available in the application. Riders can view upcoming trips through the profile and "My trips" area. Previous trips may also be displayed there.
Booking rides in advance
BRATS On-Demand allows rides to be scheduled up to seven days in advance. Advance scheduling can be useful for appointments, work, or other trips known ahead of time, but availability remains subject to BRATS capacity.
A rider who sees "No Ride Available" in the app is being told that BRATS does not currently have a vehicle or driver available to accept the requested trip in that area and time period. If the rider's schedule is flexible, BRATS recommends trying another time. Calling the scheduling department does not create additional availability because scheduling staff have access to the same ride availability passengers see through the application.
Arrive-By and Leave-At Trips
BRATS provides two scheduling concepts that are especially important for riders traveling to timed appointments or work: "Arrive-By" and "Leave-At." Choosing the appropriate option helps the system understand whether the priority is reaching a destination by a specific time or avoiding an excessively early pickup.
Arrive-By scheduling
An Arrive-By trip should be used when the rider must reach a destination by a particular time. BRATS specifically gives appointments and employment as examples. If an appointment begins at a fixed time, the trip should be scheduled around the required arrival rather than simply requesting departure at the same time the rider believes the drive should begin.
This matters because BRATS is shared transportation. Other passengers may board or leave the vehicle during the trip, and traffic, weather, and other boarding activity can affect travel time.
Leave-At scheduling
A Leave-At request is appropriate when the rider does not want the bus to arrive before a certain departure time. BRATS gives the example of an appointment or job ending at 2:00 p.m. In that situation, the rider can schedule a Leave-At trip for 2:00 p.m. or later so the requested pickup is not scheduled before the activity has ended.
BRATS schedules trips within a 30-minute window to account for possible traffic, weather, and other passenger boardings. Riders should therefore plan around the BRATS pickup and arrival windows rather than assuming transportation will function like a private vehicle arriving at one exact minute.
Fares and Ride Payments
BRATS On-Demand fares are based on mileage. The first five miles cost $2.00. The fare then increases by $0.50 for each additional five miles. Riders can review the county's fares, routes, and scheduling page for the county's transportation categories and scheduling resources.
When an account is created through the app or by phone, the rider is prompted to provide credit or debit card information. A temporary card hold may appear when a ride is booked. BRATS explains that the hold is used to make sure the payment can be processed when the ride ends.
A pending hold is not the same as a completed fare charge. When a ride is canceled, BRATS states that the hold will be released within four to seven business days, depending on the rider's bank or financial institution.
BRATS drivers do not accept tips. Riders should therefore treat the transportation fare as the required payment and should not attempt to add a driver gratuity.
Pickup and Driver Arrival
After an On-Demand trip is confirmed, the application shows the driver's estimated arrival time. Riders can follow the driver's progress in real time and use the app information to locate the designated pickup point.
BRATS also sends a text message before the driver arrives. When the vehicle reaches the pickup location and the rider is not approaching the vehicle, the driver attempts to call the telephone number associated with the rider's BRATS account.
The three-minute boarding limit
Drivers are not allowed to wait more than three minutes for a rider to board. This limitation exists because other passengers may already be on the vehicle or may be waiting for scheduled pickups.
Riders should be ready to leave when the vehicle approaches rather than waiting for the driver to arrive before gathering belongings or moving to the pickup location. Keeping the account telephone number current also matters because BRATS uses that number when a driver cannot locate the passenger.
If a rider misses the vehicle, BRATS allows the passenger to request another ride through the app or customer service. The county states that the passenger will not be charged for the ride that was missed.
Changes and Cancellations
A pickup or destination can be changed only before the passenger boards. If the trip has not started, the rider can cancel the existing trip and make a new booking with the correct pickup or destination address.
Once the ride has begun, the destination cannot be changed. Riders should therefore review both addresses before boarding, especially when several similar street names, office complexes, medical buildings, shopping centers, or entrances could cause confusion.
Canceling an upcoming ride
On-Demand trips may be canceled through the application or through BRATS customer service. The rider app guide describes cancellation through the scheduled-trip details screen.
BRATS asks passengers to cancel as soon as they know transportation is no longer needed. The general scheduling instructions ask riders who must cancel to call at least one hour before the pickup time. There is no charge for canceling a trip, but the county warns that no-shows may result in suspended service.
Late cancellations can also affect other passengers because BRATS transportation capacity is shared. A reserved pickup may influence vehicle routing and availability for other riders.
Accessibility and Mobility Needs
BRATS offers wheelchair-accessible vehicles. A rider booking through On-Demand should select the wheelchair accessibility option when scheduling the trip.
Passengers booking through the scheduling team should tell the scheduler if they need special assistance, use a mobility device, or require lift equipment for boarding. BRATS specifically requests this information so the scheduled vehicle can be lift equipped when necessary.
Accessibility information should be provided during the booking process rather than waiting until the vehicle arrives. This gives BRATS the information needed to assign transportation that matches the rider's stated boarding needs.
Service and Scheduling Hours
BRATS distinguishes between transportation service hours, customer service scheduling hours, office hours, and mobile application availability. Those time periods are related but are not identical.
The BRATS operating-hours page provides the following schedule:
Customer service scheduling: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Office hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Mobile app scheduling: available at all times through BRATS On-Demand.
BRATS On-Demand transportation service: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Holiday closings are determined by the Baldwin County Commission. Riders planning transportation near a county holiday should account for those closings when arranging a trip.
Managing Scheduled Trips
The rider application provides a "My trips" area for managing scheduled transportation. Riders can open a future trip to review its details and can also view past transportation records shown in the app.
Trip details may include the pickup window, estimated pickup information, destination, rider information, accessibility selections, fare, and other booking details supported by the service. Reviewing these details before the trip can help identify an incorrect address or time while there is still an opportunity to cancel and rebook.
Saved locations
The app also allows riders to save frequently used locations. A location can be assigned a recognizable name such as home or work so the address can be selected more quickly during future bookings. Saved locations can be accessed from the home screen or through the application's settings.
Even when using a saved location, riders should verify that the selected address is still the intended pickup or destination for that particular trip.
Shared-Ride Travel Times
BRATS On-Demand should not be treated as a nonstop ride between two addresses. The service combines passenger trips when appropriate, and the driver may make additional pickups and drop-offs during the rider's journey.
This distinction is especially relevant for appointments and employment. A passenger who calculates travel time based only on ordinary driving distance could leave insufficient time for the shared-ride structure. BRATS therefore uses arrival windows and provides the Arrive-By option for trips that must reach a destination before a fixed starting time.
Weather and traffic can also affect scheduling. BRATS specifically incorporates these possibilities into its 30-minute scheduling windows.
When a Ride Is Unavailable
A "No Ride Available" message means BRATS is experiencing demand that cannot be accommodated at the requested time with the available vehicles or drivers. It does not indicate an application error by itself.
Riders with flexible travel plans can try another requested time. Contacting the scheduling department does not give a rider access to a separate inventory of vehicles because BRATS scheduling agents use the same availability that is reflected in the passenger booking system.
This is one reason advance planning can be useful for trips associated with work, appointments, or other time-specific obligations. BRATS allows advance scheduling up to seven days before the trip, although advance requests remain dependent on transportation availability.
Lost Items and Ride Feedback
Passengers should collect their belongings before leaving the BRATS vehicle. If an item is left behind, BRATS asks the passenger to contact customer service and provide a description of the missing property.
BRATS will attempt to locate the item. If the property is found, the passenger may be told where it can be picked up. BRATS may also schedule a BRATS trip to return the item to the passenger, with the regular fare applying to that transportation.
Passengers can submit feedback through the ride feedback screen in the application after a trip. Concerns or complaints can also be reported through BRATS customer service. The county asks riders reporting a concern to provide as much information as possible so staff can review the issue.
BRATS Vanpool Transportation
BRATS also participates in a workforce transportation program with Commute with Enterprise. This vanpool service is intended for commuters whose trips start or end in Baldwin or Mobile counties.
Eligible vanpools can receive a $600 monthly subsidy per vehicle from the Baldwin County Commission. The county describes the program as an option that can reduce wear on a personal vehicle and can provide transportation for commuters who do not have reliable transportation of their own.
The vanpool arrangement also includes month-to-month flexibility, maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance, and an emergency ride home. It is separate from booking an individual BRATS On-Demand trip and is designed around commuter transportation.
Common Booking Mistakes
Several avoidable problems can interfere with a BRATS trip. Riders can reduce those problems by reviewing booking information before confirming transportation and by understanding how the shared-ride system operates.
Incorrect physical addresses
BRATS asks for physical pickup and destination addresses. Riders should make sure the address entered into the application or given to a scheduler corresponds to the actual location where boarding and drop-off are expected.
Choosing the wrong trip type
A passenger with a fixed appointment or employment start time should use an Arrive-By request rather than assuming a Leave-At time will produce the required arrival. A rider who cannot leave until an activity ends should select a Leave-At time that is no earlier than the expected end of that activity.
Missing accessibility details
Wheelchair use, lift requirements, mobility devices, or other special-assistance needs should be identified when the ride is booked. This allows BRATS to account for the requested equipment or vehicle accessibility.
Waiting too long at pickup
The BRATS driver cannot wait more than three minutes after arriving when the rider is not approaching the vehicle. Watching app notifications, checking text messages, and being at the pickup point when the vehicle arrives can prevent an unnecessary missed trip.
Trying to change a trip onboard
The destination cannot be changed after the ride has started. A rider who notices an incorrect destination before boarding should cancel and rebook the trip with the correct address.
Ignoring cancellation requirements
BRATS asks riders to provide at least one hour of notice when canceling under its general scheduling instructions and encourages On-Demand passengers to cancel as soon as they know the ride is no longer needed. Repeated no-shows may result in suspended service.

BRATS Bus FAQs
Can I book a BRATS ride from a web browser?
Yes. Baldwin County provides a browser-based booking option in addition to the BRATS On-Demand mobile app. This can be useful when you are using a computer, do not want to install an app, or prefer a larger screen for entering trip details. Start from the county's official BRATS transportation page, which links to the current web booking system. Before submitting a request, double-check the pickup location, destination, date, and trip option shown on the screen.
Where can I check BRATS route information?
Baldwin County maintains a separate Fares, Routes, and Scheduling page. It is the better place to check county-published information about Ride to Work routes, the Baylinc schedule, fares, and scheduling options. Riders looking for a particular route should verify the current county information rather than relying on an older schedule saved on a phone or computer, since transportation information can be updated.
Where are BRATS holiday closings posted?
BRATS follows holiday closings determined by the Baldwin County Commission. The county's BRATS hours page includes access to holiday-closing information. Riders planning transportation around a county holiday should check the official page before making time-sensitive plans, particularly when transportation is needed for work, appointments, or another activity that cannot easily be rescheduled.
Is there an official BRATS app instruction manual?
Yes. Baldwin County publishes a rider app guide covering account access, trip setup, pickup-point adjustment, ride options, scheduled-trip management, favorite locations, notifications, and trip reviews. Riders who are unsure where a feature is located can use the county's official Rider App Guide for step-by-step instructions and screen examples.
